When Your Septic System Needs a Repair

Typically, the signs that your septic system needs repairs are pretty obvious.

The most common complaints that we get are sewage backing up into the home, a foul odor of sewage being easily detectable from inside or outside of the residence.

These are definitely instances where you should contact us to identify the cause of the problem.

We cannot stress enough, though, that homeowners should remember that any waste that is seeping up out of the ground, into the yard or into the home, should be avoided at all costs. This is biohazardous material. Adults may be fully aware of this, but children and animals need to be protected and prevented from getting too close.

We always recommend sectioning off the entire area to prevent any mishaps and scheduling an appointment with us as soon as possible.

What to Expect from Our Septic Tank Repair Service

We would love the opportunity to earn your business, and hopefully become your septic system service provider in the future. When you hire us to pump your septic tank, this is what you can expect from us:

Finding Sewage in Your Home

This is probably the most alarming issue that homeowners experience with their septic systems. If you know where the lid is on your property and can locate it, lift it and check the water level. If you're not comfortable doing this on your own, you can call us and we'd be happy to do this step for you. If you find that the water level is lower than the outlet, this might mean there's a clog between the house and the tank. A plumber can help you with this. If the water level is higher than the outlet, then there is a septic system issue here. The first step would be to schedule a septic tank pumping service with us. While we're at it, we'll be in a better position to determine whether there might be a larger issue that needs to be addressed. On the other hand, if you notice that your drainfield is saturated because of all of the flooding, the pumping service should wait (but feel free to call us and talk these concerns through.) In this situation, emptying the tank may cause the tank to begin to float, which would break the pipes. Keep in mind that this is a general overview, and that you should definitely call us if you discover sewage in your home.

You've Got a Soggy or Stinky Drainfield

Always beware of any standing water or soggy ground in the drainfield area, because chances are, biohazardous substances are responsible for the wetness. Our first recommendation would be to section that area off--maybe with some kind of temporary fencing--especially if you have children or pets, and do your best to keep them away from that zone. Then give us a call. You may have a broken pipe, or depending on the type of septic system you have, the bacteria may have deactivated, causing the sewage to back up. Give us a call so that we can we can schedule a repair service and diagnose the problem.

FAQ About Septic Tank Repair in Irvine

  • How much does a septic system repair cost?

There is quite a range here depending on the septic system type, the repair needed, and whether the system is easy to get to or not. But we're talking anywhere from $300-$5,000 for a septic system repair.

  • How long will a septic system last in California?

If installed properly and well-maintained, an appropriately-sized septic tank should last for several decades. There are many things that shorten that lifespan, though, and will result in frequent repairs or even septic tank replacement. These are the frequency of the pumping services in the past, topsoil composition, overhead vehicle traffic, or foreign objects being flushed down the pipes.

  • What is a "baffle," and how can I know if mine is working properly?

Baffles are key supplementary components of a septic system, particularly older septic tanks and those made of concrete. Each septic tank has two of them--one at the inlet and one at the outlet. Their job is to route waste water through the tank, while making sure that the solid waste remains separate from the rest. Unfortunately, issues with baffles can not be identified by untrained professionals. Diagnosis of this problem involves inspecting the inside of the septic tank. Baffle repair requires a delicate touch, as removing the remains of an old baffle can damage the walls of your septic tank.

  • How will I know if my leach line is failing?

There are a number of ways to detect leach lines that have failed or are failing:

    • Slow-running drains inside the home
    • Mushy yard or yard with standing water
    • Water backing up inside the home
    • Gurgling sounds within the home
    • Areas of the yard appearing to be greener or more lush near the septic system
    • Foul sewage odors inside or outside of the home

Common Septic System Repairs

While there are a number of septic system repairs that we have handled over the years, there are some that are more commonly performed.

Septic Pipe Repair

If you notice standing water or a foul odor between the septic tank and the drain field and other clearing efforts have not solved the problem, a broken pipe is likely the cause. If a pipe has broken, cracked, collapsed due to shifting ground, etc., it will require a septic pipe repair service. Other possibilities are corrosion of older pipes, or leaking joints allowing water or sewage to escape. When we're able to come and assess the situation, we'll be able to determine whether a septic pipe repair will suffice, or if a septic pipe replacement is needed.

Baffle Wall Rebuilds

As time goes on, baffles tend to become damaged and worn down. If your baffle becomes worn, cracked, or goes missing altogether, the effectiveness of your septic system automatically reduces by a considerable amount. A baffle wall rebuild or baffle repair can prevent plumbing backups, noticeable sewage smells, and wet, hazardous drainfields. Since these tend to break down over time, repairs are sometimes necessary.

Septic System Leach Line Repair

Leach lines are an essential component of a septic system. When they fail, you've got a major problem on your hands, because the entire system fails along with them, as they are the last step in the process of the functionality of the septic system. If you need a leach line repaired, please contact us immediately.

Septic System Seepage Pit Repair

It's typically not easy to damage seepage pits. Most of the time, we run into this problem where construction projects are being done on the property and inadvertently damaging things underground. In these cases, the best course of action is to excavate the pit and repair anything that's been damaged. On the other hand, if the seepage pit is already old and approaching the end of its lifespan, the best thing to do may be to fill in the pit and install a new one somewhere else on the property.
